Signs your heating needs repair
- No heat at all, even with the thermostat set to Heat
- Air that never feels warm, or a house that can’t reach the setting
- The thermostat shows “emergency heat” or “aux heat” most of the time
- The outdoor unit is covered in ice that doesn’t clear
- A furnace that won’t light or keeps shutting off
- A burning or electrical smell that lasts
- A winter power bill much higher than last year’s
Does it really get cold enough to matter?
Yes. The average January low around Pensacola is 43.7°F, and December’s is 45.9°F (Florida Climate Center, 1991–2020 normals for Pensacola (opens in a new tab)). Those are averages, so some nights are colder. Most homes here heat with electricity: 89% of occupied homes in Santa Rosa County (US Census ACS 2020–2024, Santa Rosa County (opens in a new tab)). A heat pump that isn’t working right falls back on electric heat strips, which cost far more to run.

Outstanding service and knowledge!! Owning several rental properties I’ve hired many different companies over the years. Freers has some of the best techs in the business. Can’t thank them enough for trouble free heat and AC over the years.
Heat pump problems we fix most
- Stuck on emergency heat. The outdoor unit isn’t carrying the load, so the backup strips run. The power bill shows it first.
- Defrost problems. A failed sensor, board or valve leaves the outdoor coil iced over.
- Reversing valves. The valve that switches a heat pump between heating and cooling can stick.
- Low refrigerant. A leak means weak heat in winter and weak cooling in summer.
- Heat strips and sequencers. The backup electric heat can fail, so the house gets cold on the coldest mornings.
Furnaces and thermostats
We also repair gas and electric furnaces: igniters, flame sensors, limit switches and blower motors. And we replace failing or miswired thermostats, a surprisingly common cause of “no heat” calls.
Smell gas? Leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside. Don’t switch lights or appliances on or off.
Safe checks before you call
- Set the thermostat to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature, and replace its batteries
- Check the breakers for the air handler, heat strips and outdoor unit
- Replace a dirty filter. A clogged filter can trip the heat off
- Make sure a gutter isn’t dripping onto the outdoor unit and freezing it
Questions people ask about heating repair
Why is my heat pump blowing cool air?
Heat pump air is warm but not hot, usually cooler than your hand expects, which is normal. If the house can’t reach the thermostat setting, something is wrong: low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve or a defrost problem. Call us.
What does “emergency heat” or “aux heat” mean?
It means backup electric heat strips are running. That’s normal for short periods on cold mornings or during defrost. If it shows all the time, the heat pump outside isn’t doing its job, and your power bill will show it.
Is ice on my outdoor unit normal in winter?
A light frost is normal. The unit clears it with a defrost cycle. Thick ice that stays for more than a couple of hours is not normal. Don’t chip it off. Call us.
Do you repair furnaces too?
Yes. We repair heat pumps, furnaces, electric heat strips and thermostats on every brand.
Do you offer emergency heating repair at night or on weekends?
No. Freer’s works Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with no nights, weekends or emergency calls.
