How does a mini-split work?
An outdoor unit connects to indoor heads through a small line set that runs through the wall. Each head has its own controls, so every room can sit at its own temperature. ENERGY STAR describes it simply: no duct work is needed, and head units mount on an interior wall or ceiling (ENERGY STAR, ductless heating and cooling (opens in a new tab)).
Our AC needed attention, and Freer’s exceeded our expectations. They were quick to schedule us, showed up right on time, and were incredibly friendly from start to finish. The technician (Mike) thoroughly explained everything…
Where a mini-split makes sense
- A room addition or converted garage
- A sunroom or Florida room that’s hot in summer and cold in winter
- A workshop, shed or office
- A bedroom over the garage the main system never reaches
- An older home with no ductwork
Are mini-splits efficient?
They can be. ENERGY STAR says certified mini-splits use up to 60% less energy than standard electric resistance heaters (ENERGY STAR, ductless heating and cooling (opens in a new tab)). And because there are no ducts, there’s no duct leakage.
Keeping a mini-split running
Clean the washable filter in each indoor head regularly. Have the system checked once a year. The drain line on each head can clog in Gulf Coast humidity, just like a central AC’s. Ask us about adding mini-splits to a maintenance agreement.
